Our Love Story

2.07.2012

Whew! I can't believe we're already to the one-week countdown for Valentine's Day...where the heck is 2012 going!? I'm super excited because I may or may not have just convinced our professor to let us out early from class next week by telling him he needed to take his wife (who's wayyy prego) out for one last hoorah before the baby comes! He totally bought it! I can be very convincing, just not with Kyle, haha!

I've had some fellow bloggers asking for me to share Kyle and my's story, and what better way to do that than by linking up with Becky of From Mrs. to Mama for "What's Your Love Story!"

So here goes...

1. How long have you and your significant other been together?
Oh myyyy...let me do some math...Kyle and I started dating just before Winter Break during our Junior year of high school (December 12, 2003). Whooo! Long time!
Junior Prom!
2. How did you meet? {What's your "love" story?}
Kyle moved to Wilmington in 7th grade, and we became friends in high school when he sat behind me in Math class. I kept the books for the men's basketball team, and Kyle played, so I got to ride the bus with the boys to go to the away games, and we would always talk on those rides! I had gotten out of a relationship in September of that year and thought Kyle was really sweet! We had 2 mutual friends working to set us up and it worked! We started dating and never looked back! It was weird because we fell in love so young, and we knew we were young, but we also knew what we had was really special! We handled dating while going to separate colleges well (I think it made us stronger because we grew into our own individually and together) and got engaged before our senior year!

3. If married, how long have you been married? If not, is this the guy you hope to marry? {do tell}
I will be married to my sweet hubby for 2 years this April 17th! Best 2 years of my life!
April 17, 2010
4. If you are married, where did you get married at? Big or small wedding?
Kyle and I got married in Wilmington at the church where his dad is the rector (although my preacher did the ceremony!). It was a very big wedding...Kyle's dad's church has a very large congregation and because we were both from Wilmington and had been dating from high school, we had a lot of people that we both knew and were connected to! Our reception was at the Yacht Club on Wrightsville Beach, and it was absolutely perfect!

If you look closely, you can see the water, just past that walkway...it was right on the beach!

5. Do you have any nick-names that you call one another? Do share!
We have about a million different nicknames for each other, but I mostly call Kyle "Boo" and he mostly calls me "Schnooks"...totally started out as a joke and stuck!

6. Name 3 things you love most about your honey.
1. He is so caring and selfless
2. He makes me a better person
3. He's my best friend in the whole wide world

7. Tell us how he proposed?
Funny story! It was a Sunday before we were going back to start our senior years of college, and Kyle had said he wanted us to have a special dinner. We had actually even gotten into a silly argument that afternoon (aka I had gotten upset about something stupid), but I remember for some reason my mom kept stressing to me that I should just drop it, enjoy the night, etc and even offered to help me pick out my outfit (should've known!). We had a great dinner at Sweet-n-Savory, one of our favorite places, and then Kyle asked if I wanted to go walk around Airlie Gardens. It's technically not opened for visitors to just come and go as they please, but Kyle's dad's church owns a little chapel in the Gardens, so his dad had a passcode that we used to "sneak" in. We'd had a picnic there for one of our anniversaries, so it was kind of a special spot! At this point, I was totally suspecting a proposal, but we walked around the gardens and nothing happened! And we walked out onto a dock, and still nothing, and finally Kyle was like, "Ok let's just take one more pic and head back to the car." At this point, I was totally thinking he was trying to trick me this whole time to kinda throw me off since I'd been playing around with him for the whole summer saying things like, "Oh are you going to propose then!?" I turn to him and kinda hit his pocket, and go "Nice fake-out!" but I realized that I had hit the ring box. Kyle got a goofy grin on his face, and said, "Well, I was going to wait until the walk back, but now that you've found it..." and he said he sweet little speech and put that beautiful ring on my finger, and the rest is history!

8. Is he a flowers and teddy bear kind of guy for v-day, or strawberrieschampagne, and rose petals?
He's more of a flowers, funny card, nice dinner and present kind of guy! Just what I like!
I loved getting flowers for V-day in college!
9. Are you a sunset dinner on the beach kind of girl, or pop a movie in and relax on the couch?
Definitely both! There's a time and a place for each!

10. Tell us one thing you'd like to do with your significant one day. If you could do anything? Go anywhere?
I'd really like to travel someplace secluded and tropical with Kyle! I think it sounds so romantic and fun!

11. Tell us what you plan on doing on this Valentine's Day.
First, I'll be celebrating with my 20 valentines (aka my 3rd graders) at school, which is always adorable and fun! Then, Kyle is cooking us a nice dinner, and I'm on dessert duty! I still have to go to class for a little bit that night, so nothing too crazy! I'm just looking forward to a nice, cozy evening with him!

12. Are you asking for anything this Valentine's day?
Of course! I love presents, but this year I'm asking for Kyle to chip in for some special activities happening at my college bff's bachelorette weekend that I cannot mention because it's a surprise, and I know she reads the blog!

13. Give us one piece of advice of keeping a relationship strong and full of love.
Communicate about your needs! My preacher asked us to read a wonderful book called His Needs, Her Needs for our pre-marital counseling, and it was really great. He says it's the recipe for an affair-proof marriage since most people stray because a certain need is not being met. It also helped me to realize that guys and girls have different needs and problems happen when we think we're meeting our spouse's needs because we're doing the things that we'd want when the needs are actually different! Great book, great advice!

14.  Show us a picture of what love means to you.

Love makes you feel like it's just the two of you, on top of the world...so does kissing at the top of the Eiffel Tower!

  5. 2003 was a great year to start dating :-) And I totally agree about the growing up individually and together while at separate colleges. We did that, and while it was hard, I know it was the best thing for us! And your proposal story is too cute! I almost found my ring too! Trey had it in the chest pocket of his jacket and waiting for lunch before he proposed, I kept putting my hands on his chest! We are just too smart :-)
